Divisions Top

This competition is open to pre-college students residing in the U.S. 

Categories: (I) Piano, (II) Violin

Divisions:

  • (1) Senior division: Grade 9 through 12
  • (2) Junior division: Grade 8 and Under

    * Previous first-prize winners cannot compete in the same division on the following year.
    * Please note that the division is based on Grade rather than the age of the competitor.
    (Please disregard any previous announcements that separate the divisions by age.)

 

Competition Rules Top
  1. Music of competitor's choice must be performed from memory.
  2. Music may be used only for the piece from the required music repertoire.
  3. No transcriptions will be allowed.
  4. Questions concerning repertoire may be directed to sejong@sejongsociety.org
  5. Judges may not hear pieces in their entirety due to time constraints.
  6. The approximate performance time limit at the competition will be:
    • i. Senior division: 12 minutes
    • ii. Junior division: 8minutes
  7. The decision of the judges will be final.
  8. Prizes may not be awarded at the judges’ discretion.
  9. The competition will not provide an accompanist but can recommend pianists upon request. The contestant is responsible for arranging rehearsals and paying expense for the accompanist.
  10. First prize winners cannot compete in the same division the following years.
  11. One clean copy of original music score and two clean copies must be provided for the judges. Contestants will not be allowed to compete if he/she fails to provide a clean original music score. Please number measures at the beginning of each line.

Repertoire Requirements Top

Two pieces of music are required to be performed by each contestant.

I. Piano

Senior division:

  1. One solo piece of the competitors' choice from memory and without repeats AND
  2. One of the following required pieces. Contestants may use music only for the required pieces.
      1. Sung Joo Hong “Bell Flower”
      2. Eugene Cha “Chaos” based on Sae-Ta-Ryung
      3. Dae-Seong Kim “Changu-Nori”

 Junior division:

  1. One solo piece of the competitors' choice from memory and without repeats AND
  2. One of the following required pieces. Contestants may use music only for the required pieces. Junior division contestants may choose senior division pieces. Senior contestants must choose only from the senior repertoire list.
      1. Jean Ahn “ Nil-Lili” for solo piano
      2. Hyun Kyung Kim “Blue Bird”
      3. David Schober "Fugue after the Korean National Anthem"

II. Violin

Senior division

  1. First or third movement from any concerto or one piece for violin with piano from memory without repeats. AND
  2. One of the following required pieces. Contestants may use music only for the required piece. Junior division contestants may choose a senior piece. Senior contestants must choose only from the senior repertoire list.
      1. Jeongkyu Park “Toad” for violin and piano
      2. Hyo Jong Kim “ Sopum”
      3. Keumok Huh “Sopum based on a theme of SangYoungSan”
      4. David Evan Jones “Eemulnori: Memory and Reflection”

 Junior division

  1. First or third movement from any concerto or one piece for violin with piano from memory without repeats. AND
  2. One of the following required pieces. Contestants may use music only for the required piece. Junior division contestants may choose a senior piece. Senior contestants must choose only from the senior repertoire list.
      1. Rhee Haun “Dorajie”
      2. Dong-Ji Moon “Hae-Ga San Ma-loo-eh Ju-mool-uh-do”
      3. Keumok Heo “Fantasy” for Violin and Piano based on the Theme of Sarang by Nan-Pa Hong

III.  Ordering a bounded book with all required pieces

A bounded book with all required pieces (all music in one bound book, 13 pieces, total 120 pages) may be purchased in person ($10) at:
