MISSION

1. Mission

The goals of the Sejong Writing Competition are to discover talented children and young adults in writing and to encourage them to write about Korea. Through this writing competition we hope to promote awareness and understanding of Korea’s cultural heritage among our young generations growing up in United States. The organizational goal is to promote harmony among people of various ethnic backgrounds and to bridge Asian and western culture through our programs.

ELIGIBILITY

2. Eligibility Requirements :

This competition is open to ALL pre-college students residing in the US regardless of their ethnic background.

DIVISIONS

3. Divisions: (as of May 15, 2006)

Senior division: grade 9 – 12

Junior division: grade 8 or younger

ESSAY TOPICS

4. Essay Topics (Must write on one of the following four topics.)

(a). "How does the situation in North Korea affect Korean identity in  America ?"

(b). "The challenges and rewards of living with 1st generation Korean American parents."
or (If you are an adopted Korean, “The challenges and rewards of living with adoptive parents”) .

(c). "Influence of Korean-American culture on US culture"

(d). "Describe an event in your life and discuss what it taught you about being a Korean American in America."

ESSAY REQUIREMENTS

5. Essay requirement

-Must NOT exceed 1,000 words. (counting words)

-Must be written in English.

-Must be typed in Word file using Times New Roman font size 12 with margins 1” for top, bottom and both sides.

-Must have page numbering; i.e. page 1 of 5 etc.

-Must not have name or any other identifiers of applicants on the essay.

-Must submit the essay as an e-mail attachment to Sejong@sejongsociety.org
(Alternate e-mail address: Sejong1@sejongsociety.org )

-Must submit the application form as a separate e-mail attachment to above address.

-Must enter “Sejong Writing Competition Entry” as the subject of e-mail with above attachments.

PRIZE

6. Prize:

Senior Division: First Place ($ 500), Second Place ($ 400), Third Place ($ 300)

Juniors Division: First Place ($ 300), Second Place ($ 200), Third Place ($100)

Additional Prize:
In addition to the above cash prizes, a savings bond for $250 will be awarded to the winners. 6 savings bonds (total $1,500, $250 each) were donated by Mr. Edward Kwanhun Rim to be awarded as an additional prize to the Sejong Writing Competition winners.

*Winners’ essay may be published as a book and on newspapers, The Korea Times Chicago and Korea Quarterly.

 

USE OF SUBMITTED ENTRIES
7 . We reserve right to use all submitted pieces in our future publications for the Sejong Cultural Society and there will not be compensation to the authors. The Sejong Cultural Society reserves the right not to award a prize.
SUBMISSION DEADLINE
8 . Submission Deadline : May 15 , 2006. Essay must arrive on or before 12:00 midnight .

ANNOUCEMENT OF WINNERS

11. Please visit our website for detailed information regarding competition regulations. The results of the competition will be posted on our web site www.sejongsociety.org and published on Korea Times Chicago in late June 2006.
