| Johannes Gray, age 11, of Wilmette,   IL, began playing the cello at  age of two and a half. Currently, Johannes studies cello with Gilda Barston and  Hans Jorgen Jensen at the Music Institute of Chicago, where he also studies  piano with Soo Lee and composition with Matt Hagel.  On Dec. 29, 2008, Johannes was named the  Overall Open Division Winner of the 2008 Walgreens National Concerto  Competition.  He is also a top  prize-winner in several other competitions, including the 2008 Sejong Music  Competition, all divisions, primary through senior, 2005-2008, of the Chinese  Fine Arts Society Music Festival in Honor of Confucius competition, and 2007  SAM primary division.  Johannes has  played in master classes with several leading pedagogues, including Lynn  Harrell, Amit Peled, Timothy Eddy, Anthony Elliot, Aldo Parisot and Janos  Starker; and has performed at events for the Yo-Yo Ma Silk Road Project,  performed live on WFMT radio, and in January 2008 performed, the last movement  of the Haydn Concerto in C with the Oistrak Symphony Orchestra at DePaul  University. Johannes also performs with his string quartet, The Shades of Gray.  Outside music, Johannes is a passionate ornithologist and avid reader. | 
  
  
     Chan Ji Kim composes for dance, chamber  ensembles, orchestra, multimedia performances and electroacoustic music. She is  a native of Korea, studied  music composition at E-Wha Women's University in Korea (BA), New York  University (MA), and University   of Florida (Ph.D). Her  music has been performed at the World Music Days in Timisuara, Romania, the  Summer Music Festival in Asisi, Bari, and Florence in Italy, Anton Webern  Ensemble Concerts in Berlin, Germany, Sinfonia Orchestra of Bucharest in  Romania, the International New Music Consortium (INMC) concert series in Italy  and Romania, the New Music Society concert in Seoul, Korea, Alliance of Women  in Music (IAWM) congress, International Double Reed Society (IDRS) conference,  the Sigma Alpha Iota Women composers' Showcase, Millennium 2000 Dance Concert  in New York City, the Southeastern Composers Symposium, the Society of  Composers, Inc. (SCI) national conference, and Florida Electroacoustic Music  Festival. She has been commissioned by major international chamber ensemble  groups: Anton Webern Quartet in Berlin, Germany; ProContemporonia in Bucharest,  Romania; Les Basses in Seoul, Korea; and R20 (String Orchestra) in Wroclaw,  Poland. Her music is available in print in TrevCo Music, and on CD on  Piccoloist Music in USA and  AGS (Akashibu Gakufu Shuppan) in Japan. Currently, Dr. Kim is  Assistant Professor of Music at the Brevard  Community College in Florida where she teaches theory,  composition and electroacoustic music. 
          “Ja-Jang-Ga (Lullaby)”for cello and piano is based  on traditional Korean folk songs. The first lullaby’sthematic material is from “Se-ya, Se-ya,  Pa-rang-seya,” follow by the second lullaby,  “A-ri-rang.” The calm melody and sonority in the low cello voice recollects  Korean grandmothers’ lullabies for generations.
